TIPS ON THIS PROJECT INCLUDED!
Please note these are NOT CREPE PAPER. These nylon lanterns can be used for indoor or outdoor use AND they are water-resistant. They are the best choice for crafting too because if you make a mistake with your hot glue it just peels off and you can try again. Paper lanterns will not be so forgiving and will rip and tear easily. I would also recommend skipping a few lanterns in between your hot air balloons. It will be less crowded when hanging them.
This Jute string is perfect for any craft project so with the holidays coming up and this twine being super universal it only makes sense to grab it now! With this link, you can get 328 Ft for $3 for a limited time only.
With these 6¨ skewers, we were able to do 2 different Hot Air Balloon sizes. You can use the paddle portion as part of the decoration or snap the paddle off for a shorter Balloon.
These were perfect for making the baskets. We even used the handle portions for some detail on the hot air balloons. These are also great for a little thank you present that the guests could take home from the party or use them as balloon weight covers. Oh Oh! you could put little succulent plants in them too and add a bow, that would be a cute idea! Point is, I will use the heck out of these little bags and you will too!
Step by Step DIY Mini Hot Air Balloons Tutorial
So now that I´ve covered the materials you’re ready to create your DIY Mini Hot Air Balloons!
TIP: Do the details at the end! We created the bones of the Mini Hot Air Ballon first so we could cover any blemishes and make the finishing pretty. It worked! There were a few spots that needed some touch-up that we were able to hide with the details.
Start with the Mini Hot air Balloon Baskets!
Grab your scissors and cut the handles off the bag. Now open the bag and make cuts down the 4 corners. Note the black dotted lines in the photo to show a cut line. Now fold down each side out towards you about 2/3 the way down. (DONT GLUE YET)
The baskets at this size look too big still. Now cut the basket down the center all the way across. So you have two pieces.
With your hot glue gun put a small blob inside on the bottom and slide the other side into that half. Now unroll and reroll the floppy sides together and glue them down in place. BOOM! we have Mini Hot Air Balloon Baskets and they are adorable!
Next – Attaching the baskets to the Lanterns
TIP: You can make your Mini Hot Air Balloons different heights by snapping off 2¨ of your skewers! They looked cute short and tall!
Take your twine and wrap the skewer with a dot of hot glue to secure both ends.
You´ll need 4 skewers for each Mini Hot Air Balloon.
Glue the skewers evenly around and below the halfway point on the lantern. All the ends should sort of meet in the middle. Let Dry.
Finally, put a small blob of glue in the bottom of the basket and hold your skewers to meet and dry together.
AND FINALLY, The details!
The cross stitch string was perfect! Pick the best 2-3 colors for whatever the occasion. Use the twine as your pain rope then put a few of the colors together and twist them to create a rope. Droop them between each skewer all the way around. Have fun with this part! Add layers of rope to the balloons, around the baskets, even using the basket handles to look like the fire burner! We added the costume jewelry too! It gave each basket a story and looked very unique.
This is always my favorite part of DIY. Adding the final touches to pull it all together. With Mini Hot Air Balloons the mini balloon details were the cutest. Grab some cool looking costume jewelry or beads to make these come to life.
Tie up some of the string to make a little rope and glue it to the side for the cutest effect!
No money was spent doing the details so I bet you already have something in your crafting supplies that would work perfectly to replace any of the items I listed!
